Jade Dragon Council

DaoShima Susan, JDS Advisor/Interim Abbot

DaoShima has made Alaska her home since 1983. Her vision for Jade Dragon Sanctuary is an eco-friendly space with gardens and structures that harmonize with nature… a campus where all Alaskans and world travelers can find soulful refuge in calm and serene surroundings. DaoShima began her Daoist studies in 1994 and continues to study and teach Tai Chi Chuan, Tai Chi Sword, BaGua, martial applications, meditation, and Taoist philosophy.

Shima Kathi, JDS President

Shima Kathi is Alaska born and raised, a teacher of Tai Chi, Qigong and Meditation, a Massage Therapist and a wanderer on the Way. Her hopes for Jade Dragon Sanctuary is that it becomes Sacred Space that draws those interested in furthering their knowledge of Daoist Arts and those who want to share their knowledge of the Way. As she wanders along the Way, she's dabbling in many of the manifestations of creativity.

LaoShih Carmen, JDS Treasurer

Born and raised in Alaska, LaoShih Carmen has been practicing Tai Chi since May 2000. Her hopes for Jade Dragon Sanctuary is that it will sweeten the community of the Alaskan coastal city of Anchorage and continue to blossom into a wonderful future she has not yet imagined. Carmen enjoys Tai Chi, meditation, fencing, writing, photography, museums, history, music, biking, hiking and beadwork as it all fuels the creative process. She lives in Alaska with her husband and two very spoiled and adored cats.

LaoShih Sharon, JDS Secretary

After graduating from college in 1978, LaoShih Sharon traveled "north to her future" to serve as a VISTA Volunteer with the Alaska Women's Resource Center… and never left! In 2001, she began studying Tai Chi, Qigong, and the underlying philosophy of Daoism. She appreciates the many benefits offered by these ancient oriental arts and sees Jade Dragon Sanctuary as a source of information for others to learn about the physical and mental benefits of these healing arts. She enjoys practicing Tai Chi and Qigong, playing the guitar and mountain dulcimer, and traveling with her husband Bernard to unique destinations around the world.

LaoShih Mary, JDS Council Member

Lao Shih Mary has lived in Alaska since 1989. She is a Registered Nurse and Massage Therapist. Her 20+ years of Eastern healing studies feed her private practice as well as her Tai Chi and Qigong teachings. She has long dreamed of a Daoist sanctuary in Anchorage and sees Jade Dragon as a refuge for practicing mind-body-energy disciplines in a very natural and peaceful environment. She enjoys exploring the great Alaskan outdoors; spending time with her husband, four dogs, and 15-year-old Senegal parrot; and anything to do with beading, needlework, or fiber-arts.
